CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia’s novice women won all their events today when they hosted Georgetown for their first fall event.
The races began with a 4400-meter novice eight head race. The UVa novice eight `A’ finished first (15:09), followed by the UVa `B’ eight (15:19), and the Georgetown `A’ (15:44) and `B’ (16:15) boats.
In the 1000-meter sprint, the UVa `B’ and `A’ novice eights finished in first and second place respectively. Georgetown’s `A’ and `B’ eights were third and fourth in the competition. Finishes for the second 1000-meter sprint were the same, with the UVa `B’ boat (4:18.07) in first place, UVa `A’ (4:25.95) in second, and Georgetown `A’ (4:30.97) in third. The Georgetown `B’ novice eight experienced some difficulty at the start of the race and did not finish the event.
The regatta ended with a final novice eight 500-meter sprint. Again, the UVa `B’ boat finished first. Georgetown’s `A’ boat took second place, followed by the UVa `A’ boat in third.
Virginia novice coach Kushlani de Soyza was pleased with her team’s first fall performance. “We’re off to a great start,” she said. “Considering the fact this is our first race, I think this shows lots of promise for the rest of the fall and the spring.”
