Virginia’s Josh Etu Competes for United States in the World University Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships

TOKYO, Japan – University of Virginia wrestler Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) competed in two matches for the United States in the 2000 World University Wrestling Championships at the Sports Hall at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center. Etu, a second-year heavyweight wrestler at UVa, is one of eight members competing for the U.S. in the World University Greco-Roman Championships.

Etu currently stands 0-2 in the competition after dropping two matches on Monday. He lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Korea’s Lee Wook at 8:14, before falling to Belarus’ Andrei Chekhauskoi in a 10-0 technical fall match at 3:27. Etu will compete in one more pool match on Tuesday, November 7th.

Etu is being coached in the World University Wrestling Championships by Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson and Greco-Roman Resident Coach Anatoly Petrosyan, who works full-time at USA Wrestling’s national headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.

To participate, an athlete must be 17-28 years old, must be a current college student, or have graduated from a university withing one year of competition.

The U.S. team was selected based upon performance on the national level, with National Team ranking, Olympic and Regional Trials and Resident athlete participation the top criteria. In addition, performance at USA Wrestling age-group national events was also part of the selection process.

Etu was unable to compete in Virginia’s Blue & Orange exhibition match on Sunday, November 5th due to his participation in the WUWC.
