CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team opened the 2000-01 season with a 100-61 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the first round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament at University Hall tonight. Five players scored in double figures for Virginia, led by Svetlana Volnaya’s 20 points.
The teams exchanged leads throughout the first 10 minutes, but with the score tied at 19-19, the Cavaliers went on an 11-4 run to take control of the game. Virginia scored 16 points in the last four minutes to take a 46-29 lead at halftime. The Cavaliers shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half and two players scored in double figures. Telisha Quarles scored 11 points in the first half and Schuye LaRue registered 10 points and four rebounds.
Virginia added to its lead in the second half, shooting 58.1 percent. A three-point field goal by Volnaya with 9:36 left in the game gave the Cavaliers a 27-point lead. The Cavaliers went on a 23-6 run and Quarles’ three-pointer with 2:16 remaining gave Virginia a 97-56 advantage. Virginia reached the 100-point mark on a layup by Quarles in the closing minutes. The Cavaliers outrebounded Mount St. Mary’s, 50-34.
Volnaya led the Cavaliers with 20 points and Quarles added 19. LaRue finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Dean’na Mitchelson and Chalois Lias each added 10 points. Mount St. Mary’s was led by Kia Williams’ 14 points and eight rebounds. Beth Foster registered 12 points and seven rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Virginia will host George Washington on Sunday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.
