Virginia's Zwarich Earns First Team All-ACC Accolades

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) has been selected to the 2000 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball First Team as voted by the league’s nine head coaches. In addition, UVa first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) has been named to the ACC All-Freshman Team as announced Wednesday (November 15).

Zwarich, 6-1, is one of seven players named to the ACC’s first-team. Zwarich, a 1997 All-ACC Freshman Team pick, is having a record setting season for the Cavaliers. A two-time ACC Player of the Week this season, Zwarich has broken Virginia’s single match, single season, and career kills records this year. Zwarich slammed 40 kills against Duke on September 19, to break the former school mark of 31 kills in a match. She also recorded 35 kills against Virginia Tech on October 21 and now holds Virginia’s top two single match kill totals. On November 4, Zwarich set the Cavaliers’ single season kills record with her 499th of the 2000 campaign and enters the ACC Championship with 531 on the season. Zwarich became UVa’s career kills leader on November 10 with the 1,466th kill of her career and now has 1,484 kills to her credit in her stellar career. Zwarich also ranks fourth on Virginia’s career blocks list with 449.

This season, Zwarich leads all ACC players with 531 kills (4.96 per game) and is also second in the conference in blocks with a career-best 132 (1.23 blocks per game). She is hitting .271 on the season and has also totaled 179 digs and 15 service aces.

Davis, 5-11, is the Cavaliers’ first ACC All-Freshman Team selection since 1997 when Zwarich and Andrea Fischer were both named to the rookie team. Davis has had a terrific freshman year for Virginia as she is second on the team in both kills and digs. She has posted 387 kills and 361 digs this season and is also seventh on the ACC’s digs per game list with an average of 3.19. Davis has registered 20 double-doubles in kills and digs this season, including a streak of 13 consecutive double-doubles from September 23 through October 28. She has also contributed 55 blocks and 20 service aces in 2000.

Wake Forest junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya has been selected as the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, while Georgia Tech’s Kele Eveland has earned the conference’s Rookie of the Year award. Florida State’s Cecile Reynaud has been selected as the ACC Coach of the Year.

Virginia is seeded sixth in the 2000 ACC Championship and begins play in the tournament on Friday, November 17, when it plays host and third-seeded Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m. at Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Cavaliers enter the ACC Championship with a 15-14 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the ACC. The Demon Deacons, who stand at 19-8 overall and 10-6 in the ACC, defeated Virginia twice this season by 3-0 and 3-2 scores. In the latest meeting on November 10 in Winston-Salem, the Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead over Wake Forest, but fell in five games, 3-2. In the first meeting of the 2000 season between the two squads, Wake posted a 3-0 win at University Hall on September 22.
