CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) has been selected to the seven-member 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team. The selection of Zwarich to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team marks the fifth time a UVa player has been named to the team. It marks the first time a Virginia volleyball player has been named to the team more than once, as Zwarich also earned the honor in 1999.
Zwarich set an ACC Championship single match kills record in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, November 17 when she tallied 33 kills in a 3-1 win over Wake Forest. Her performance broke NC State’s Stephanie Taylor’s 16 year-old record of 32 kills versus Duke in the 1985 tournament. In two matches in the 2000 ACC Championship, Zwarich totaled 44 kills, nine digs and seven blocks.
Zwarich, 6-1, was one of seven players also named to the 2000 ACC All-Conference first-team for regular season play. Zwarich, a 1997 All-ACC Freshman Team pick, had a record setting season for the Cavaliers. A two-time ACC Player of the Week this season, Zwarich broke Virginia’s single match, single season, and career kills records this year. Zwarich slammed 40 kills against Duke on September 19, to break the former school mark of 31 kills in a match. She also recorded 35 kills against Virginia Tech on October 21 and now holds Virginia’s top three single match kill totals, after her 33-kill effort in the quarterfinals of the 2000 ACC Tournament. On November 4, Zwarich set the Cavaliers’ single season kills record with her 499th of the 2000 campaign and concludes the season with 575 kills. Zwarich became UVa’s career kills leader on November 10 with the 1,466th kill of her career and concludes her stellar career with 1,528 kills. Zwarich also ranks fourth on Virginia’s career blocks list with 456.
This season, Zwarich led all ACC players with 575 kills (5.04 per game) and is also second in the conference in blocks with a career-best 139 (1.22 blocks per game). She hit .277 on the season and also totaled 188 digs and 16 service aces.
Virginia concludes the 2000 season with a 16-15 overall record, marking a school record fifth-consecutive season that UVa has posted a winning record. The Cavaliers were also 8-8 mark in the ACC and advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals for the third straight season.
