LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The University of Virginia wrestling team finished eighth out of 13 teams with 51 points in the Mat Town USA 2000 Invitational, which was hosted by Lock Haven University. The Cavaliers had five wrestlers place in the top eight spots for their respective weight classes, highlighted by Josh Etu’s (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) second place finish in the heavyweight class after posting a 3-1 mark in tournament action. Etu began the invitational 3-0 before falling to Purdue’s Jake Vercelli in the heavyweight finals.
Missouri won the invitational with 139 points, followed by Pittsburgh (138 points) and Lock Haven (125 points). Missouri’s Justin Spates (125 lbs.) was named the Outstanding Wrestler.
Along with Etu, UVa’s Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional), Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport), Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) and Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) each placed in one of the top eight spots of their weight classes in the invitational. Alexander (133 lbs.) and Massey (184 lbs.) each placed sixth with a record of 3-3. Painter (HWT) gathered seventh place with a mark of 2-2 and Freday (197 lbs.) took eighth with a record of 3-3.
The group of P.J. Bory (149 lbs.) Don Carlo-Clauss (157 lbs.), Greg Francesca (165 lbs.), Brian Muir (165 lbs.), Scott Mania (184 lbs.) and Ernesto Vera (149 lbs.) posted one win each in their respective weight classes, finishing with records of 1-2.
UVa will return to action on Friday, December 1st when Virginia hosts Binghamton in a dual match. Competition is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be held at Memorial Gymnasium.
