CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four players scored in double figures as the University of Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Old Dominion, 78-67, at University Hall today and improved its record to 5-3. Senior forward Svetlana Volnaya scored 15 points for the Cavaliers and connected on all five of her attempts from the field. Virginia’s bench accounted for 41 of the team’s 78 points.
Sophomore forward Schuye LaRue registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Naismith Player of the Year candidate added five steals, two blocks, and one assist. Senior forward Chalois Lias netted 12 points and registered five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Freshman guard Chelsea Whitaker came off the bench to add 11 points for Virginia.
Old Dominion jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but a 7-2 run by Virginia, capped off by a Volnaya three-pointer cut the Lady Monarchs lead to five points. The Cavaliers were held scoreless for two minutes and Old Dominion increased its lead to 24-14 with 12:06 left in the first half.
Virginia rallied with a 13-2 run and Lias’ basket gave the Cavaliers a 27-26 advantage with 3:19 left in the half, marking their first lead since the opening minute. The Cavaliers scored seven points in the final minute to lead Old Dominion, 37-33, at halftime.
The Cavaliers shot 51.7 percent in the second half and connected on five three-point field goals. Anna Crosswhite’s consecutive three-pointers gave Virginia a 49-44 lead with 15:43 left in the game. Old Dominion battled back and Okeisha Howard hit consecutive three-pointers to give the Lady Monarchs a 59-57 lead. LaRue and Whitaker combined for 11 points as Virginia took a seven-point lead with five minutes remaining. Howard scored five points to bring Old Dominion to within three at 70-67, but Virginia scored eight in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Hamchetou Maiga led Old Dominion with 19 points and Howard finished with 17. Sharron Francis added 13 for the Lady Monarchs, who dropped to 1-3 overall.
