STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the annual Penn State Open wrestling tournament in Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University. Over 400 wrestlers competed in the event where UVa turned in several solid finishes.
Virginia heavyweight Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) highlighted UVa’s overall performance by claiming first place in his weight class by going 5-0 to earn the heavyweight title. Etu pinned Navy’s Tom Schwabenbauer in just :24 in his first match and posted a 10-2 major decision victory over James Madison’s D.J. Hockman in his second bout en route to defeating Penn State’s Pat Cummins by the score of 6-4 in the championship match to claim first place.
UVa’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) each finished fourth in the placing bouts, with Carlo-Clauss (157 lbs.) going 3-2 and McGrath (184 lbs.) finishing 2-2 in the meet. McGrath, a red-shirt wrestler for UVa, competed unattached in the event.
The Cavalier duo of Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) and Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) combined for a record of 6-4 after both wrestlers finished 3-2 in the 165 class. Francesca defeated Eastern Michigan’s Adam Gilmore in a technical fall (21-6) match and topped Syracuse’s Harold Jean-Louis with a major decision victory (20-8). Muir posted a fall at 3:26 over Dan Foster of Bloomsburg in his first win of the event.
The trio of Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) at 125 lbs., Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) at heavyweight and Brian Voliva (Piscataway, N.J./Blair Academy) at 174 lbs. each finished 2-2 for Virginia. Voliva pinned Lehigh’s Dave Brundage at 4:31 to earn his first victory of the event.
Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) finished 1-0 after posting a 21-4 technical fall over Binghamton’s Rob Sckalor at 141 lbs. and Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) finished 1-2 at 197 lbs. with a 8-1 decision over Shaun Rodgers.
P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox), Mark McLean (Plainfield, N.J./Blair Academy) and Ryan Stewart (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) also competed for UVa in the meet.
Virginia (2-0 overall, 0-0 ACC) will return to action on Wednesday, January 5th when the Cavaliers travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face Cornell in a dual match.
