CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head volleyball coach Melissa Shelton has announced the selection of Irene Renteria as assistant volleyball coach. Renteria joins the Virginia coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan for three years from 1996 to 1999.
Renteria graduated from UCLA in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Psychology. She was a standout volleyball player for the Bruins, and helped lead the team to national championships in 1990 and 1991. UCLA was also a national finalist in 1992. Renteria served as a team co-captain in 1993 and was a Second Team All-West Region pick the same year. She was a member of the 1990 All-PAC 10 Freshman team and played in the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival. As a middle blocker, Renteria finished her career with 590 kills, 360 total blocks and 410 digs.
While coaching at Michigan in the 1996, 1997 and 1998 seasons, Renteria planned and organized practices, arranged team travel plans, developed outreach efforts with alumni, designed and implemented training programs, and monitored and implemented statistics and video programs. During her coaching tenure at Michigan, Renteria also served as the assistant director and coach at Greg Giovanazzi Volleyball Camps in Ann Arbor from 1996-1998. Her duties at the camps included development and implementation of marketing strategies, hiring and supervising camp staff, supervising daily camp activities, and coordinating an accounting system.
Renteria began her collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at UCLA from 1994-96. She also served as the head volleyball coach at Westlake Volleyball Club in Los Angeles from 1993-96.
“Irene’s personal experiences at the NCAA’s highest level will be a huge benefit to our young team. Her volleyball knowledge and training techniques are outstanding. She will be a fantastic addition in our gym,” said Shelton.
