GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia first-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Baly shares the award with North Carolina’s Erika Acuff. Baly earned the award after winning three individual events in helping lead the 11th-ranked Cavaliers to a 136-107 victory over N.C. State on Saturday, January 13 in Raleigh, N.C.
Baly is the third UVa swimmer to be named ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week this year. Second-year Cara Lane has earned the award twice, while fourth-year Megan Iffland was selected once.
Baly won the 400 individual medley, 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke against the Wolfpack. She led a top three UVa sweep in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:19.73. Baly won the 500 free in a time of 4:51.42, again leading a top three Virginia sweep. Baly’s third event win came in the 200 breaststroke as she posted a winning time of 2:21.17.
Baly holds the second fastest times in the ACC in the 500 free (4:48.31), 1000 free (9:51.85), and 1650 free (16:15.92). She also ranks in the top 10 in the 400 individual medley (3rd – 4:17.00), 200 (8th – 2:05.56), and 200 breaststroke (8th – 2:19.80).
The 11th-ranked Cavaliers are currently 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. UVa has won 25 consecutive dual meets dating back to the 1997-98 season. Virginia’s dual meet winning streak will be severely tested on Saturday, January 20, when UVa hosts seventh-ranked and defending ACC Champion North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 11th-ranked Virginia men host 14th-ranked UNC at 1:00 p.m. at the AFC.
