Charlottesville, Va. – The University of Virginia has released its 2001 football schedule which features seven home games, and 12 games overall, for the Cavaliers. Starting times will be announced later.
New head coach Al Groh and his Cavaliers kick off the 2001 campaign on Aug. 25 with a first-ever meeting at Wisconsin in the Eddie Robinson Classic. This game marks UVa’s third appearance in one of the various “preseason games.”
Virginia opens its seven-game home schedule the following week (Sept. 1) against in-state foe Richmond. This is the third meeting between the two schools in the last five seasons.
The Cavaliers then have 12 days before facing Penn State at home in a Thursday night contest to be televised by ESPN.
Virginia also plays home games against Duke (Sept. 29) and Florida State (Oct. 20), and closes the season with three consecutive home games–Wake Forest on Nov. 3, Georgia Tech on Nov. 10 and Virginia Tech on Nov. 17.
In addition to the Wisconsin game, the road schedule includes games at Clemson (Sept. 22), Maryland (Oct. 6), North Carolina (Oct. 13), and N.C. State (Oct. 27).
Virginia finished the 2000 season with a 6-6 record and faced Georgia in the O’ahu Bowl in George Welsh’s final season as UVa’s head coach.
