CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host North Carolina in a matchup of the top swimming programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday, January 20 at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier men will host North Carolina at 1:00 p.m., and then the Virginia women will swim against North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
The Virginia men stand at 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC this season and are ranked 11th in the latest Speedo College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 poll, while UNC is ranked 14th. The Tar Heels stand at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC in 2000-2001. The Cavaliers have won the past two meetings against North Carolina, including a 176-124 victory last season at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Virginia women’s streak of 25 consecutive dual meet victories will be severely tested by North Carolina. The Tar Heels are ranked ninth in the CSCAA Top 25, while UVa is ranked 12th. The Cavaliers are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC this season, while UNC is 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Virginia’s streak of 25 consecutive dual meet victories dates back to the 1997-98 season. Saturday’s guest, North Carolina, is the last team to defeat Virginia in a dual meet, and that was a 160-140 setback on January 24, 1997 in Chapel Hill. The Cavaliers have won three of the last four dual meets against North Carolina, including a 158-142 triumph last year in Chapel Hill.
After Saturday’s meet against North Carolina, the Cavaliers will host Duke on Saturday, January 27 at 1:00 p.m. in the final regular season home meet of the year. Virginia will also host the 2001 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships for both the women and the men at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The ACC Women’s Championship will be held February 15-17, while the ACC Men’s Championship will be held February 22-24. Prelims begin each day at 11:00 a.m. and finals commence at 7:00 p.m.
