WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Six members of the Virginia men’s tennis team started their 2001 spring season Friday (Jan. 19) at the ACC Indoor Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C. Second-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./ Norfolk Academy) was the only Cavaliers player to advance in the tournament. He moved on to the third round of the singles draw with a pair of victories over Wake Forest’s Rick Phillip, 6-4, 7-5, and Georgia Tech’s Amit Taggaer, 7-5, 6-3. Duquette will play Wake’s Mike Murray in third-round action Saturday morning (Jan. 20).

First-year Gregg Alpert (Englewood, Colo./ Cherry Creek) lost to Duke’s York Allen, 6-1, 6-3, and third-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./ Waynesboro) fell to Jason Yeong of Georgia Tech, 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, Jonathan Chou (Newport News, Va./ Hampton Roads Academy) lost to Georgia Tech’s Sergio Aguirre. 6-4, 6-3. Fourth-years Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./ St. Stephens) and Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill), got their final season underway Friday as well. Hunter fell victim to Georgia Tech’s Gordon Hwang, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, while Croker fell to Wake’s David Bere, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles, Croker and Hunter defeated David Cheatwood and Tyne Brownlow from North Carolina, 8-5, while Alpert and Romesburg lost to Wake Forest’s Raul Munoz and David Loewenthal, 8-1.

Croker, Hunter, Alpert, Chou and Romesburg will all play consolation matches Saturday morning (Jan. 20).
