CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split their dual meets with Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina on Saturday afternoon (January 20) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 11th-ranked Virginia men defeated 14th-ranked North Carolina 139.5-103.5, while the ninth ranked North Carolina women snapped the 12th-ranked Cavaliers’ 25 dual meet winning streak with a 175-125 victory.

The 11th ranked Virginia men improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC by winning nine of 13 events, in defeating 12th-ranked North Carolina (4-2, 2-1 ACC) 139.5-103.5. First-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) led the Cavaliers to the victory by winning a pair of individual events and also swimming a leg on a winning relay. Anderson won the 50 free in 20.46 and claimed first place in the 100 free in 44.95. He also swam the leadoff leg on UVa’s winning 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:01.80. Anderson, first-years Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) also swam legs on the winning free relay. Johnson and Haag finished second and third in the 100 free with times of 45.71 and 46.52, respectively. Wagner was also victorious in the 200 back as he touched in 1:47.21. First-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won both the 200 and 500 free in 1:40.07 and 4:28.17, respectively. Second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) won the 1000 free in 9:07.25 with fourth-year teammate Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) taking second in 9:07.73. Second-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) took first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:49.70, while second-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) captured first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.22. Fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) was second in the 200 fly in 1:50.16. Third-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) placed second in the 200 back and third in the 200 IM, with times of 1:48.96 and 1:52.08, respectively.

North Carolina’s Stephen Krebs won the one and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 288.53 and 341.93, respectively. Eric Poitras scored 273.45 in the one-meter competition and 291.83 points on the three-meter board to take second place in both events.

The ninth-ranked North Carolina women (6-1, 3-0 ACC) snapped UVa’s 25 consecutive dual meet winning streak with a 175-125 win that dropped the Cavaliers to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels won 10 of 16 events. Virginia second-years Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Alison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) paced the Cavaliers with a pair of wins apiece. Lane broke her own pool record in winning the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.21. Her former pool record in the 200 fly was 1:59.35. Lane also won the 500 free with a time of 4:47.43. Sharp swept the one and three-meter diving events with season-best scores. She totaled 271.73 points in winning the one-meter competition and then scored 279.45 points in earning the top spot on the three-meter board. Second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) and fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) rounded out Virginia’s individual event winners with Bosevska taking the 1000 freestyle in 9:51.11 and Iffland winning the 200 backstroke in 2:01.79. Bosevska was also runner-up to Lane in the 500 free (4:54.44) and was second in the 200 IM (2:06.57) as well. Iffland also earned a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (56.01). First-year Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) took second in both the 100 (51.51) and 200 free (1:49.78), while first-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) was runner-up in the 1000 free (9:53.38) and 200 breast (2:20.27) and third in the 200 IM (2:07.38).

Katie Hathaway paced the Tar Heels with individual event wins in the 100 (1:02.85) and 200 breast (2:16.30) and the 200 IM (2:02.63). Hathaway also swam the second leg on UNC’s winning 200 medley relay (1:43.39). Erika Acuff swam a leg on the winning medley relay and also won the 50 free (23.49) and 100 fly (55.52).

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, January 27 when they host ACC rival Duke at 1:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
