PRINCETON, N.J. – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) advanced to the finals of the Farnsworth/ Princeton Indoors in singles and doubles on Saturday (Jan. 27). Vahaly will play Erik Sharp from St. Johns in the singles finals Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Sharp defeated UVa’s Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-4, spoiling an all-Virginia final. Vahalywill team with Montgomery in the tournament’s doubles final after the singles match is complete. The duo will face Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock from Princeton.
Vahaly defeated Vito Menza from Dartmouth, 6-0, 6-0 on Friday (Jan. 26), before dispatching Tim Kofol fcrom Princeton, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round. On Saturday (Jan. 27), Vahaly knocked off Yale’s David Goldman, 6-1, 6-0, before besting Goldman’s teammate from Yale, Greg Joyce, 6-1, 6-0.
Montgomery also had an easy time in his first two matches, registering a 6-4, 6-2 victory over N.C. State’s Michael Carducci before beating Princeton’s Nick Benjamin, 6-0, 6-2. He then defeated Columbia’s Oscar Chow, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before losing to Sharp in the semis.
In first round doubles action, Montgomery and Vahaly teamed up to beat Chris Kuchner and Scott Tolep from Rutgers, 8-3. The top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Virginia pair then defeated Princeton’s Daniel Friedman and Judson Williams in the quarterfinals, 8-6, and Columbia’s Oscar Chow and Danny Opici in the semis, 8-1.
This weekend’s tournament served as a tune-up of sorts for both Vahaly and Montgomery, who will compete in the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next week (Feb. 1-4).
