TONIGHT’S GAME
Virginia enters tonight’s game at N.C. State with a 14-8 overall record.The Cavaliers are currently ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN poll.Virginia’s Atlantic Coast Conference record improved to 5-4 with a 76-73(2OT) victory over Wake Forest on January 28. The Cavaliers snapped a two-gamelosing streak with the win. Virginia had lost their last three ACC contestsprior to the victory over the Demon Deacons.
N.C. State enters the game with a 12-8 overall record and a 3-6 markin the ACC. The Wolfpack dropped out of the Associated Press poll after los-ingfour consecutive games. N.C. State is currently ranked No. 24 in the USAToday/ESPN poll. The Wolfpack snapped a four-game losing streak with an 85-66 victory over Florida State on January 29.
Tonight’s game marks the 52nd meeting between the two teams andVirginia leads the series, 28-23. Earlier this season, the Cavaliers defeated N.C.State, 77-64, in Charlottesville, Va. on January 2. Virginia currently has a five-gamewinning streak in the series. The last time that N.C. State defeatedVirginia was on February 12, 1998 when the Wolfpack defeated the Cavaliers,70-63, at Raleigh, N.C.
SCOUTING N.C. STATE
The Wolfpack enter tonight’s game with a 12-8 overall record andrecently dropped out of the Associated Press poll after being ranked No. 22.N.C. State is currently No. 24 in the USA Today/ESPN poll. The Wolfpacksnapped a four-game losing streak with an 85-66 victory over Florida State onJanuary 29.
Two players are averaging double figures in scoring. Sophomore for-wardCarisse Moody leads the Wolfpack in scoring with 14.4 points per gameand senior guard Tynesha Lewis is averaging 13.5. Lewis registered the firsttriple-double in school history with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assistsagainst Florida State on Monday. Moody is the leading rebounder with 6.6 pergame. Kay Yow, currently in her 26th year as the head coach at N.C. State,became the fifth women’s basketball coach to record 600 wins when theWolfpack defeated Temple, 71-64, on January 11.
CAVALIERS vs. WOLFPACK
Virginia and N.C. State have played 51 games and the Cavaliers havea 28-23 advantage in the series. The last time that the teams played was onJanuary 2, 2001 and Virginia defeated N.C. State, 77-64, in Charlottesville.N.C. State’s last victory in the series was on February 12, 1998 when theWolfpack defeated the Cavaliers, 70-63, at Raleigh, N.C.

LAST MEETING
Virginia scored the game’s first five points and never looked back,defeating No. 16 N.C. State, 77-64, on January 2, 2001 in Charlottesville.Schuye LaRue led all scorers as she notched her fourth consecutive double-doublewith 25 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Crosswhite put the Cavaliersup for good with her three-pointer from the right corner 36 seconds into thegame. The teams battled back and forth with the Hoos stretching the lead tonine with 12:06 to play in the half as Telisha Quarles converted a pair of freethrows, two of her 16 points on the night.
The Wolfpack surged to within one at 25-24 with 2:01 left in the half,but the Cavaliers closed with a 6-2 run, including the final four from Quarles,to take a 31-26 lead at the break.
Virginia started the second half with an 11-0 run, thanks to six pointsand a pair of steals from LaRue. The Cavalier defense held the Wolfpack offthe board for the first five minutes of the half, before Amy Simpson hit a threeto start an NCSU 16-4 run over a three-minute span that cut the Virginia leadto four at 46-42.
The Cavaliers responded with a 15-6 run of their own, starting witha pair of buckets by LaRue, and it was her layup at the end of the run at the6:12 mark of the period that gave the Hoos a 13-point lead. Virginia wouldextend the lead to as many as 16 with under a minute to play as ChelseaWhitaker converted a layup with just under 25 seconds to lead 77-61. TheWolfpack got a late three for a final score of 77-64.
Virginia has won the last five against the Wolfpack and extendedtheir lead in the series to 28-23 and remain the only ACC school to lead theall-time series against N. C. State.
Coaches Teleconference
The nine ACC basketball coaches will be featured ona weekly teleconference each Tuesday from 11:00a.m., to 12:15 p.m., beginning January 9 and conclud-ingFebruary 27 prior to the ACC Tournament. Theteleconference will resume on March 13 for teams inthe NCAA Tournament. UVa head coach DebbieRyan is scheduled on the teleconference at 11:46.
HEAD COACH DEBBIE RYAN
Head Coach Debbie Ryan is currently in her 24th season at the helm ofthe Virginia program, and has an overall record of 540-191. During her illustri-ouscareer, she has averaged 22.8 wins per season. Ryan has recorded 20 or morewins in a season 18 times and 30 or more twice.
Last year, she won ACC Coach of the Year honors for the seventh timeand was also named the IKON/WBCA District III Coach of the Year for guidingthe Cavaliers to a 25-9 record and a first place finish in the ACC regular season.Ryan has led Virginia to 17 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and directed theCavaliers to three straight Final Four appearances (1990, 1991, 1992). She hasled Virginia to 12 appearances in the NCAASweet 16, including 11 straight years(1987-97), three ACC tournament titles, and 11 ACC regular-season crowns.
ROSTER CHANGE
Safiya Grant will miss the second half of the 2000-01 season becauseshe is taking a semester to concentrate on her academics. The freshman guardplayed in eight games and averaged 1.8 points, 0.6 assists, and 7.5 minutes.
DICKSON’S CAREER PERFORMANCE
Marcie Dickson scored a career-high 21 points, connecting on 10-of-14attempts from the field, to lead the Cavaliers to a 76-73 double-overtime victoryover Wake Forest on January 28. The sophomore forward connected on a pair ofgame-tying shots at the end of regulation and the first overtime period to leadVirginia to the win. With the Cavaliers trailing by three points with only eightseconds remaining in regulation, Dickson took an inbounds pass under the basketand converted a short jumper and was fouled. She added a free throw to send thegame to overtime. Dickson fired a jumper from the free throw line to tie the gameat the end of the first overtime to send the contest into double overtime.
STATISTICAL SUMMARY
Three players are currently averaging double figures in scoring forVirginia, led by sophomore forward Schuye LaRue’s 17.5 points per game. Inaddition to LaRue, senior forward Svetlana Volnaya is averaging 11.6 points pergame, followed by junior guard Telisha Quarles (11.5)….Sophomore forwardMarcie Dickson, fourth on the team in scoring (7.0), scored a career-high 21points (10-14 FG, 1-1 FT) against Wake Forest on January 28. She has averaged17.5 points in the last two games…LaRue is also the team’s leading rebounderwith 10.8 per game. She is currently second in the ACC in scoring and second inrebounding…LaRue is also among the ACC leaders in steals (2nd- 2.7), field goalpercentage (4th- 48.9), and blocked shots (3rd-1.2)… Chalois Lias is fifth in theACC with 1.1 blocked shots per game.
LARUE AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
Sophomore Schuye LaRue was listed among the nation’s statisticalleaders through games of January 29th. LaRue was 13th in the nation in rebound-ingwith an average of 10.8.
