CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team swept a doubleheader from Drexel 8-4, 1-0 Friday (March 2) in the first day of competition of the 2001 UVa Cavalier Classic at The Park. In the other two games Friday, Ohio defeated Rutgers 5-4 and 6-0 with the Bobcats’ Heather Hagen tossing a no-hitter in the nightcap.
Virginia (6-6) won the first game against Drexel 8-4 as third-year first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Fourth-year right fielder Meaghan Young (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) went two for three with three runs and a RBI. Third-year pitcher Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) picked up her second win of the year with a complete-game effort. Allinder gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struck out one batter.
Drexel’s Rachel Levinson hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning as the Dragon’s plated four runs to cut the UVa lead to 6-4. Debbie Botke and Kelly Donohoe both had two hits for Drexel (1-5).
In the second-game first-year Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby) earned her first collegiate victory with a 1-0 win. Barstad tossed a six-hit shutout with five strikeouts and two walks. Barstad also drove in the lone run of the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Dennis in the fourth inning. Dennis tripled down the right field line to lead off the fourth inning.
Laura Tynio was the tough-luck loser as she allowed just the one earned run on three hits. Tynio struck out three batters and walked two. Alicia Good led Drexel in the second game with two hits in three at-bats.
In the second doubleheader of the tournament, Ohio (8-6) swept Rutgers 5-4 and 6-0. In the first game, Ohio broke a 4-4 tie with a single run in the top of the seventh inning. Kelli Bankert’s two-out single to right field scored Crystal Turner from second to lift the Bobcats to the victory. Val Wood (4-1) picked up the win with three-innings of hitless relief of starter Kasey Dowd. Turner was three for four in the game with three runs scored.
Ohio’s Heather Hagen threw a no-hitter in the second game and allowed just one Scarlet Knight to reach base as the Bobcats earned a sweep over Rutgers (0-2) with a 6-0 win in the nightcap. Hagen allowed a leadoff walk to Rutgers’ Brielle Cosentino in the sixth inning, however, Cosentino was picked off first base with two outs to end the inning. Turner continued her torrid hitting by banging out four hits in as many at-bats, including a pair of triples. She also drove in two runs and scored another.
The 2001 UVa Cavalier Classic continues tomorrow (Saturday) with a pair of doubleheaders. Rutgers and Drexel begin their twinbill at 9:00 a.m., while Virginia and Ohio square off in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with four more games.
