Syracuse, N.Y. – The Cavaliers’ Mills Hook (Timonium, Md./St. Paul’s) assisted on one goal and scored two others to help lift #7 Virginia (1-1) to a 12-10 come-from-behind victory over #9 Syracuse (0-1) today in Syracuse. Starting keeper Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft) made 12 saves to preserve the win for the Hoos. It was the first win of the season for Virginia.

Virginia jumped out to an early lead behind two goals and an assist from Hook in the first 14 minutes of the game. After a McCarthy save on the first Syracuse possession, the Cavaliers ran a fast break that concluded in a shooting space foul against the Orangewomen. Hook converted the 8-meter to put Virginia up 1-0. Hook scored the second goal on a drive to the crease after the Cavaliers gained possession with a groundball pickup by Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). Hook then fed Lacey Aumiller (Ruxton, Md./Notre Dame Prep) off a free position at the 16:05 mark for a 3-0 lead. Lacey’s sister Lauren Aumiller (Ruxton, Md./Notre Dame Prep) gave Virginia a 4-0 lead as she rolled the crease at 15:12.

The Orangewomen answered with a goal by Carrie Soults at 13:54, and at 7:55 Syracuse converted a free position to pull within two. The Cavaliers then scored two goals in a twenty-second span as Jill Hansen (Rutland, Vt./Woodstock) took a crease feed from Hook at 4:46 and then off the draw Morgan Thalenberg (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) fed a streaking Lacey Aumiller to give the Cavaliers a 6-2 advantage.

But Syracuse answered with two quick goals of their own on fast breaks, scoring twice on unsettled situations 35 seconds apart pulling back within two at the break 6-4.

The Cavaliers went up 7-4 early in the first half as Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) drove to the crease just over a minute into the second period. But three quick goals by the Orangewomen in a span of five minutes tied the game at 7-7 as Soults took a feed from Stock at 19:49. Cangemi put the Hoos ahead by two as she converted a crease feed from Lacey Aumiller at 18:37.

Syracuse then scored three goals in a four minute span to take their first lead of the day at 9-8 as Katrina Hable scored a pair and Carrie Soults had one and assisted on another. Hable’s drive to the crease at 15:44 gave the Orangewomen their first lead of the day.

The Cavaliers tied the game as Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) caused a turnover and fed the loose ball to Hansen, to fed Lauren Aumiller in the eight for a goal at 12:33.

Lauren Aumiller picked up a loose ball in the Virginia fan and ran a fast break which was converted by Hook at 3:10 off a quickstick feed from Haas, giving the Cavaliers back the lead at 10-9. Syracuse tied the game 34 seconds later as Lauren Brady drove the crease after the Orangewomen won the draw.

Syracuse won the ensuing draw and had possession in the Virginia 8, but Hansen forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball which the Hoos ran down for a goal by Cangemi off a feed by Hook with 1:08 to play. Virginia gained possession on the next draw and attempted to run out the clock, but a Syracuse foul put Hook on the 8-meter with 16 seconds to play, and Hook made the free position shot for the final goal of the game.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve their record to 1-1. They face the Monarchs of Old Dominion on March 7 in Norfolk at 5:00 pm.
