TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 38 University of Virginia men’s tennis team lost an Atlantic Coast Conference match to No. 55 Florida State, 4-3, in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday (March 3). The men fall to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
The match was hotly contested from the start. The Seminoles narrowly won the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 and an 8-5 victory at No. 3. Virginia was victorious at No. 1 doubles, where Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./ The Lovett School) and Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill) won., 8-6, over FSU’s Gustav Bucht and Alex Herrera.
The lone doubles point would turn out to be the deciding point in the match as the teams split the six singles matches. The Cavaliers and Seminoles were tied 3-3 with one match remaining on the court. UVa’s Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./ Chapel Hill) and FSU’s Jarrod Owen played the entire third set of their matchup at No. 5 singles with the match hanging in the balance. Owen eventually prevailed, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to clinch the victory for Florida State.
Virginia will play a match against Jacksonville Sunday (March 4) at 10:30 a.m., before returning to Charlottesville for a pair of matches against American and Hampton Mar. 9 and 11.
