HIGH POINT, N.C. – The University of Virginia baseball team got back to its winning ways with an 18-7 victory over the High Point Panthers this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after their first at-bat and cruised to the 11-run victory. The game ended after six innings of play due to rain and darkness.
UVa’s Hunter Wyant (4-5, five RBI, three runs) became the first Cavalier known to ever hit for the cycle after recording the feat in his first four at-bats. In Wyant’s first trip to the plate, he hit a double to right-center field. Wyant then hit a two-run home run in his next at-bat before stretching his next hit into a two-run triple. In his fourth appearance at the plate, Wyant dropped in a single to shallow center field.
Virginia’s Jon Benick (2-5, six RBI, two runs) put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard first when hit a three-run home run to right field in the top of the first inning that scored teammates David Stone (2-4, three runs, double) and Chris Sweet (2-2, four runs, double).
After High Point scored two runs in the first inning to make it a 6-2 game, it was all UVa after that as the Cavaliers scored two more runs in the second inning, five runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning before adding three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Virginia’s 18 runs scored were a season-high.
The Cavaliers’ Alan Zimmerer (1-1) recorded his first collegiate victory after pitching 5.0 innings. Zimmerer scattered 12 hits while striking out three batters. The Panthers Clayton Gordner (0-3) took the loss after lasting only 0.1 innings while giving up six runs on three hits and three wild pitches.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 8-7 overall, while the loss drops High Points record to 6-14. The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, March 13th when UVa faces the UNC-Greensboro Spartans. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be played at UNCG Stadium.
