Charlottesville, Va – Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored five goals and added an assist and three draw controls to help the #9 Cavaliers (4-2) rally past #15 Penn State (1-3) 15-11 tonight. Haas scored twice to tie the score at 3-3 after Penn State had built a 3-0 lead to start the game, and scored the final goal fo the game to punctuate the win for Virginia.
The Nittany Lions jumped out to the early lead behind Colleen O’Hara, who scored twice on a crease roll and assisted Sara Young right off the draw for the middle goal in a 3-0 run in 4:47 to start the game. The Cavaliers answered in a three-goal run in a four-minute span of their own to tie the game as Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) caught the ball in the arc and worked free for Virginia’s first goal. One minute later Haas scored her first goal on a quickstick with a feed from Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Haas tied the game up as she drove to the crease three minutes later, notching the equalizer at 20:07.
Penn State went up again by two as they converted a free position and then four minutes later O’Hara rolled the crease again, forcing the Cavs to take a time out at 13:10. From there the Virginia defense stiffened, helping the Hoos to a 6-1 run to close out the half. Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft) saved a Nittany Lion free position shot and the Cavaliers cleared the ball where Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) cut the deficit in half with a free position goal at 9:41. Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) tied the game for the last time with a crease roll of her own at 8:37, forcing Penn State to take a time out. But off the draw, which was controlled by Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), Sambus found Lauren who found a streaking Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) who scored just fourteen seconds later to give the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. Lauren scored two more goals in the half, the first coming less than a minute later as Banks found her on the crease at 7:30. Cangemi then fed Lauren three minutes later to put UVA up 8-5. Kate Jeschke’s conversion of a free position stopped the Cavalier run at 1:24, but Haas converted her own 8-meter after winning the draw. Virginia took the 9-6 lead into the break.
The two teams traded the first four goals of the second half. Virginia struck first as McCarthy made a save and the Cavaliers worked it to their offensive end where Hansen scored onan 8-meter at 27:31. Penn State answered two minutes later. Sambus then caused a turnover in the midfield and Cangemi found Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) on the crease to push the margin back to four at 11-7. Penn State scored the next two goals in just over a minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Cavaliers scored four of the final six goals to hold on for the win. Banks drew the defender and dumped it to Haas for the 12th goal, and Penn State stayed close with a goal from BJ Lucey three minutes later.
The Cavaliers added some breathing room with a pair of goals in an 11-second span as Haas fed Lauren Keller (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) on the crease, and then off the draw, which was won by Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown), Virginia scored as Muller passed to Cangemi who fed Sambus who ran it in for a 14-10 lead. Penn State’s Molly Ford scored again to pull within three, but Haas’ free position at 2:54 closed out the scoring for the game.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, March 18 as they face the sixth-ranked Princeton Tigers. Game time is 1:00 pm at Klocker. It is USLacrosse Day at Virginia and all USL members will get free admission to both the women’s game and the men’s game against Denver which will take place following the women’s game.
