IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Virginia wrestler Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) finished 2-2 in the 133 lbs. weight class at the 2001 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena (15,500) on the campus of the University of Iowa. After a first round loss, Alexander won back-to-back matches in the 133 lbs. wrestle-back bracket before falling to Pittsburgh’s Rob Loper by the score of 7-2. Loper was seeded #6 in the tournament.

Alexander dropped a 12-3 major decision bout to Purdue’s #8 seeded Evan Robinson in the first round of the competition, but bounced back and posted Virginia’s first win of the tournament with a 20-12 major decision victory over Princeton’s Juan Venturi in the 133 lbs. wrestle-back bracket. After his win over Venturi, Alexander defeated Oregon State’s Ben Richards by the score of 12-7 in his third match before falling to Loper in his final bout of the tournament.

Alexander finishes the 2000-2001 season with an overall record of 15-11.
