EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – University of Virginia second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) advanced to the finals of the 200-yard butterfly with a seventh-place performance in the preliminaries Saturday (March 17) at the 2001 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassua County Aquatic Center. UVa fourth-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) qualified 15th in the 200-yard backstroke and will swim in the consolation finals this evening.
Lane finished seventh in the prelims of the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 1:58.95 and will swim in the championship final this evening. She will also swim the 1650-yard freestyle tonight. Lane, the 1500-meter champion at the 2000 NCAAs, which is the equivalent event to the 1650-yard free, is the top seed in the 1650 free with a time of 15:58.64.
Iffland will swim in tonight’s consolation final of the 200-yard backstroke after clocking a time of 1:58.95 in the prelims. Iffland finished 15th overall in the preliminaries.
First-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) also swam the 200-yard butterfly and finished 24th with a time of 2:02.05. The Cavaliers competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay and missed advancing to the consolation final by a mere four-one hundredths of a second. Virginia finished 17th with a time of 3:25.00, while Alabama claimed the 16th and final spot in the 400-yard free relay consolation final with a time of 3:24.96. Third-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), Iffland, Dykehouse and second-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) each swam legs on UVa’s 400 free relay.
In addition to Lane, the Cavaliers will have two other participants in the 1650-yard freestyle. Bosevska was fourth in the 1500-meter free at the 2000 NCAAs and is seeded 13th in the 1650 free. First-year Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School), who is seeded seventh, will also swim the 1650 free.
The Cavaliers enter the final evening of competition in 15th place with 55 points. Tonight’s finals begin at 7:00 p.m. Compete results can be obtained at www.ncaa.org.
