Wilmington, NC – Brian Kollar (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) smashed the old ACC record in the javelin by almost a meter, tossing a 74.22m (243′ 6″) en route to winning the event at the Cape Fear Classic this weekend in Wilmington. Kollar’s record broke an eight-year-old record for the ACC and improved his own UVA record, set last year, by more than a meter. In addition, Kollar has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with his throw. Kollar was the runner-up in the javelin last year at the NCAA Championships. His teammate John Welch (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair)took second at the meet this weekend, tossing a 69.10 (226′ 8″), which provisionally qualified him for the NCAA meet.
Eliese Mitchell (Narvon, PA/Garden Spot) also set her second record of the 2001 season, throwing the hammer a school-record 52.54m (172′ 4″), breaking her record of 52.46m set last year. Mitchell led a 1-3-5 contingent in the hammer, and also took two other first place, winning the shotput and the discus (45.68m). The Cavaliers swept the medals in the discus as Inhar Chong (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) took second (45.20m) and Hillary Wilson (East Claridon, OH/Hawken-Manchester) was third (44.92m).
The Cavaliers won all of the weight events contested at the event, as Bill Johnston (Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) won the hammer with a toss of 56.54 (185′ 6″), Inge Jorgenson (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) won the javelin (45.06m), and Tim Bilmanis (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) won the discus (50.84m).
Virginia’s gold medals were not limited to the weight events, as Annica White (Weston, MA/Weston)won the pole vault (3.35m), and Caroline Harvey (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee)(5.63m) and Jarrett Hagwood (Martinsville, VA/Laurel) (7.09m) took first in the long jump events. On the track, the Cavaliers won the women’s 400m relay in a time of 46.54 and both the men’s and women’s 1500m runs as Steve Gross (Port Matilda, PA/State College) took medalist honors in 3:52.63. Jess Thomas (Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Borough)led a 1-2-3 finish in a time of 4:39.95, followed by Megan Schwartz (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (4:41.81) and Sharon O’Connor (Lorton, VA/Mt. Vernon)(4:42.37). The Cavaliers also swept the high hurdles behind Hagwood (14.75) and Kimberlee Turko (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens)(14.59). Hagwood was also the champion in the 400 hurdles (53.70) while Micheline Diakite (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) won the 800m run in a time of 2:18.17). Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, VA/New Kent) won the 200m dash (24.43), and the Hoos swept the 3000m runs as Matt Ruhl (Somerdale, NJ/Triton Regional) led a 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the steeplechase with his 9:13.63 and Dana Coons (Vienna, VA/James Madison)led the medal sweep in the women’s 3K with a 9:44.96.
