CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia third-year pitcher Erin Allinder (Norco, Calif./Norco) won both games of a doubleheader against Liberty in the Who’s Hoo Tournament Friday (March 23) at The Park. Allinder threw a two-hit shutout in leading the Cavaliers to a 9-0 win over Liberty in the first game of the doubleheader, then pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in UVa’s 2-1 eight-inning triumph over the Lady Flames in the second game. In the second doubleheader of the Who’s Hoo Tournament, Penn State defeated Bowling Green 4-3 in the first game, but the Falcons bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Penn State in the nightcap. With the two victories, Virginia improves to 24-8 on the season.
Virginia opened the tournament by breezing by Liberty (9-22) 9-0 behind Allinder’s two-hitter. Allinder struck out five and walked only one batter in earning her second shutout of the year. First-year shortstop Heather Field (Lincoln, Calif./Lincoln) led the way offensively for UVa with three hits in four at-bats, three RBI and two runs. Field staked the Cavaliers to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run triple and then surprised the Lady Flames by scampering home on the same play. Second-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) was two for three with an RBI and a run, while third-year center fielder Kelly McCabe (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was two for four. Ali Thompson (7-7) took the loss for Liberty.
In the nightcap, Allinder relieved first-year starter Joanna Barstad (Canby, Ore./Canby) with the score knotted at 1-1 and a runner on third base with no outs in the sixth inning. Allinder (8-1) induced three infield groundouts to get out of the jam. She earned the 2-1 win with three scoreless innings of relief. Virginia broke the 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. First-year first baseman Hannah Owings (Issaquah, Wash./Liberty) was placed on second base to start the inning in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule. McCabe pinch ran for Owings and advanced to third on Allinder’s sacrifice bunt. First-year pinch hitter Tracy Sherman (San Clemente, Calif./St. Margaret’s Episcopal) delivered McCabe with the game-winning run with an infield single to shortstop.
Penn State (14-8) won the first game of the doubleheader against Bowling Green 4-3 behind the pitching of Kelly McCann, who improve to 9-4 on the year, with the victory. The Nittany Lions’ Jenny Briz broke a 3-3 tie with a RBI single that plated Kelley Galigher with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bowling Green’s Andrea Genter (3-1) took the loss.
The Falcons (8-8) earned a split in the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory in the second game of the twinbill. McKenna Houle (2-4) threw a three-hit shutout in picking up the victory. Penn State’s Marisa Hanson (5-4) allowed just one earned run in defeat. Bowling Green scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first inning on a double by Renee Rosemeier that scored Jen Domschot.
The three-day Who’s Hoo Tournament continues Saturday (March 24) with Penn State and Liberty playing a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 a.m. UVa plays Bowling Green in a twinbill starting at 1:00 p.m.
