The Virginia Cavaliers had hat tricks from both Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s) but it was not enough as the ninth-ranked Hoos (4-4) fell to the #8 Tar Heels 15-12 today in Chapel Hill. North Carolina jumped out early with a 3-0 lead and extended the lead to as many as five before the Cavaliers battled back but were never able to pull the equalizer.

UNC scored three goals in the first five minutes of play before the Cavaliers were able to jump on the scoreboard. Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) shot and grubbed the high rebound and stuck it back in for the Hoos’ first goal. Carolina won the draw and scored on the fast break off the draw twice in succession to take a 5-1 lead, and then notched a sixth goal for a 6-1 lead before the Cavaliers mounted a comeback.

Virginia won possession of the ensuing draw and Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) fed Lauren on the crease. Just over a minute later Haas scored off a free position set, and one minute after that Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored a free position goal to pull the Cavaliers within 2 at 6-4 with 14:16 to play. UNC went up again with a goal, but Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) won the draw and got the ball to Lauren, who found Hook on the crease to pull back within two. Carolina scored a pair to push the margin back to four, but Lauren fed her sister Lacey (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) on the crease, and then with 32 seconds remaining in the half, Lacey scored again off a feed from Banks to pull within 2 a third time. But the Heels scored with 14 seconds to go in the half, taking a 10-7 lead at the break.

Banks scored on a drive to the crease six minutes into the half, but UNC rattled off a pair to push the margin back to four. Hook then scored two goals, the first on a crease roll off a pass from Haas at 14:40, and the second on a free position to cut the deficit to 12-10. Andrea Pfeiffer (Durham, N.C./Conestoga), who had come in for starting keeper Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft), made a save on a free position and the Cavaliers cleared the ball where Hook was fouled, setting up the free position.

Carolina scored again to go back up by three, but Banks won the draw and raced down field where she was fouled and converted the free position for the Hoos’ 11th goal. North Carolina then scored two quick goals for a four-goal lead, but Lauri Kenis (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) took the ball away in the defense and started a fast break that was converted by Banks for the final goal of the game.

Virginia returns to action on the road on Tuesday as they take on the #19 UMBC Retrievers at 4:00 in Catonsville.
