CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player David Stone (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Baseball Team. He was selected as a third team member and was one of only 33 players in the country to be named to one of the three teams.
A third-year left fielder at UVa, Stone started all 56 games for the Cavaliers during the 2001 season. He finished the year with a .340 batting average after recording 72 hits in 212 at-bats with 12 doubles. Stone scored 40 runs, tallied 26 RBI and led Virginia with 21 stolen bases after going 21-for-23 (.913) in stolen base attempts. He posted 102 putout to go along with a .981 fielding percentage.
Stone recorded a season-high, 20-game hit streak from February 17th – March 19th for the Cavaliers. One of his season highlights this year happened when he turned in a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate and scored two runs in Virginia’s 9-6 victory over Maryland (4/22). Stone currently stands second all-time at Virginia with 57 stolen bases and is second all-time at UVa with 114 walks. He holds the second best mark in a single season at Virginia with 43 walks in a season (2001) and has the fifth most stolen bases in a single season at UVa with 21 (2001).
Stone is a Biology major with a 3.91 grade point average at UVa.
