CHARLOTTESVILLE – Five Cavaliers from the University of Virginia’s Women’s Crew Team were invited to attend the U.S. National Team Pre-Elite Rowing Camp in Ithaca, NY. Sarah Brennan (St. Louis, Mo.), Claudia Durkin (Meadowbrook, Pa.), Madeline Engel (Mercer Island, Wa.), Laura Mitterer (Kirkland, Wa.), and Jennifer Reck (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) were selected by testing on the 2000 Meter Urge Test.
Brennan, Mitterer, and Reck accepted invitations and have been training at Cornell University since June 8. All rowers have previously participated in Junior World Championships before attending the University. Brennan participated in 1997, Mitterer rowed in 1998 and Reck rowed in 1999.
For Pre-Elite Camp, pre-training started during the 2001 NCAA Championships and continued until the start of camp. A typical day at the Pre-Elite Camp consists of training twice a day, enhancing rowing skills through rogometer testing and indoor rowing machine testing. The Pre-Elite Camp will last for three weeks in which the final selection will consist of two rowers to participate in the Senior World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, Aug. 25-27. The next four best rowers will be selected to participate in the Under-23 World Championships in Vienna, Austria July 27-29.
Other members of the Women’s Crew Team are also participatng in similar tournaments throughout the summer. Jessica Busch (Ardmore, Pa.) will row for UNIDINE in Philadelphia for the Independence Day Regatta July 1-2. Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer (Boucherville, Quebec) is in Montreal and will compete in the Canadian Circuit Aug. 11-12. Risa Mandzuk (St. Catharines, Ontario) is training in Charlottesville with three former Cavalier rowers also for the Independence Day Regatta. Laura Scherberger (Rosewell, Ga.) is rowing on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
