INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – University of Virginia swimmer Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) has been selected as a recipient of a 2000-2001 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships as announced by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee. Grimes is one of 116 postgraduate scholarship recipients (58 men and 58 women) who participated in winter and spring sports.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time of part-time graduate student.
Grimes, who served as a team captain in 2000-2001, was also the recipient of one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2001 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarships. Grimes has exhausted his athletic eligibility and will graduate in May of 2002. He is majoring in biology and also working on a master’s in secondary education.
This past season, Grimes earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 1650-yard freestyle with his 15th place finish (15:06.75) at the NCAA Championships. He finished third in the both the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle at the 2001 ACC Championships which UVa won with a meet record 883.5 points. His time of 14:58.45 in the 1650 free was a personal best and automatically qualified him for the NCAAs.
Grimes earned first-team All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 1500-meter freestyle. He was an honorable mention All-American in 1999 by placing ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle at the NCAAs.
Academically, Grimes was a first-team College Swimming Coaches Association of American Academic All-American in 1999-2000, and was also named to the 1999-2000 ACC Academic Honor Roll. Grimes was named to the Dean’s List five times and is a member of the OKD Honor Society. Grimes was a member of UVa’s Captain’s Council in 2000-2001 and also served as a volunteer tutor at local schools this past year.
