Virginia Football on the Radio
Story Links
Cavalier football game broadcasts are produced for Cavalier Sports Marketing by the Virginia Sports Network in association with the Virginia News Network in Richmond. The games are delivered via satellite to a team of affiliates that blanket the Old Dominion. Thanks to WRVA in Richmond, with its 50,000 watt clear channel signal at night, Cavalier football games are heard in 25 states. All of Virginia’s broadcasts are also heard worldwide on the UVa Athletic Department’s official web site, www.virginiasports.com. Virginia’s flagship stations are WINA AM 1070/WWWV FM 97.5.
Coverage begins 30 minutes before kickoff with “Cavalier Gameday,” the official pregame show.
Mac McDonald, Director of Broadcasting for Cavalier Sports Marketing, returns for his fifth consecutive season as the play-by-play voice of the Wahoos. He returned to Charlottesville in 1996 after previously serving as the “Voice of the Cavaliers” from 1980 to 1985. A four-time Sportscaster of the Year recipient, he has been voted “Best play-by-play man in the ACC” two of the last four years in a vote of 175 sportswriters and broadcasters by the ACC Sports Journal. McDonald also received the Superior Sports Coverage Award for the fifth consecutive year in 2000 by The Associated Press.
Frank Quayle, the 1968 ACC Football Player of the Year, returns for his 19th season in the broadcast booth. The outstanding running back and All-America lacrosse player has been called “one of the best in the business and one of the game’s top college football radio broadcasters” by a state newspaper. Quayle, who rushed for 2,695 yards during his Cavalier football career, had his number (#24) retired and was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of the 1969 NFL draft.
Former Virginia quarterback Gene Arnette is in his second year as the network’s sideline reporter. Arnette was co-captain of the 1968 Cavaliers as a senior and ranks among UVa’s career passing leaders with 179 completions for 2,447 yards and 20 TDs.
The Virginia Sports Network will once again feature pregame and postgame segments with UVa head coach Al Groh and Cavalier players, and “Cavalier Talk Back,” a live telephone talk show following every UVa game.
Cavalier football is sponsored by Team Virginia.
