CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team put forth a gallant effort, but fell to 10th-ranked Stanford 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-26) in the Jefferson Cup Tournament Friday evening (August 31) at University Hall. In the first match of the evening session, 15th-ranked Minnesota defeated Radford 3-1 (30-22, 30-22, 21-30, 30-28).
With the loss, Virginia falls to 1-1 on the season, while Stanford improves to 2-0. Minnesota improved to 1-1 with its win over Radford, while the Highlanders fell to 0-2 on the season. In a coaching milestone, Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert coached his 1000th collegiate career match in the Golden Gophers’ triumph over Radford.
Rally scoring is now used for all collegiate matches with a point being scored on every serve. The first four games of a match are played to 30 points (win by two). The fifth game (deciding game) is rally scoring to 15.
In their loss to Stanford, the Cavaliers were paced by fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), who tallied nine kills, six block assists and five digs. Second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) drilled seven kills and hit .333. She also added four block assists and two service aces. Third-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) registered a match-high nine blocks, while second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) added six kills, three blocks and three digs.
Ashley Ivy and Olympian and All-American Logan Tom and led Stanford with 12 kills apiece with Tom hitting .455. Tom also added five digs and four blocks, while Ivy contributed seven digs. Ogonna Nnamani was also in double figures in kills for the Cardinal with 10 and added seven digs. Setter Anna Robinson dished out 40 assists and recorded six kills.
Minnesota defeated Radford 3-1 behind a match-high 21 kills from Stephanie Hagen. Hagen hit .563 in the match and also had six digs. Kathy Tilson recorded a double-double for the Golden Gophers with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Cassie Busse had 10 kills and eight digs. Setter Lindsey Berg notched 39 assists, six digs and five kills.
Katie Sherwood led Radford with 16 kills, while Sarah Gates posted a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. Melissa Morgan was the third Highlander to reach double figures in kills as she had 10 and also added four service aces. Setter Bliss Mulligan totaled 40 assists.
The Jefferson Cup Tournament concludes Saturday (September 1) with a pair of matches. Radford and Stanford square off at 12 noon, while UVa hosts Minnesota at 2:30 p.m.
