The Virginia Cavaliers opened their 2001 season with a 3-0 victory over Mississippi in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Lori Lindsey led the way with two goals, including the game-winner, while also registering five shots. Alyssa Benitez led the Cavaliers with seven total shots.
“We incorporated a lot of first-year players into the lineup today, plus it was our first game, so with all the excitement we did well and feel good coming out with the victory,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “It was good to get two late goals in the second half to clinch the victory for us. Despite only having three shots, all three shots Mississippi had were good shots and could have tied the game at any point when we still had the 1-0 lead.”
Lindsey scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted goal in front of the net less than 18 minutes in to the game. Virginia took a 1-0 into the second half before Lindsey added her second goal of the game at the 80:37 mark of the game on an assist from Kelly Worden. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Benitez scored on a one-timer set up by Laura Gaworecki.
The Cavaliers are 1-0 on the season, and return to action next weekend as they host the Virginia Soccer Classic at Klockner Stadium. Virginia plays West Virginia on Fri., Sept. 7, at 7:15 p.m. and Auburn on Sun., Sept. 9, at 3:15.
NOTES – Clugston’s shut out in goal was the fifth of her career in just her 12th career start as a Cavalier … first-year players Katie Bunch, Jamie Fabrizio and Jessica Trainor all started in their first career game for Virginia … Lindsey Gusick and Gilian Hatch also saw playing time … Virginia outshot Mississippi 27-3 for the game, and did not allow the Rebels a shot in the first half … In addition to Benitez’ seven shots and Lindsey’s five shots, Gaworecki added four shots while Sarah Lane and Gusick added three … Lindsey now has 24 career goals, one more from tying Liz Kelley (1993-96) and Kristen DiMillio (1992-95) for eighth place on the school’s all-time list.
