CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team lost to Wake Forest 3-0 (30-28, 30-21, 30-20) Friday evening (October 5) at University Hall. The Cavaliers fall to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the loss, while Wake Forest improves to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the ACC.
Second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led Virginia with eight kills and added five digs. Fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) totaled six kills and team-highs of nine digs and three blocks. Davis and Harmon both registered two service aces as well. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) recorded three blocks to equal Harmon for the team-high in that category, and also had six kills. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) posted 27 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Margaret Davidson led the Demon Deacons with 11 kills and hit .381. Trina Maso de Moya, the 2000 ACC Player of the Year, had 10 kills and four digs. Setter Ashley Phillips notched 39 assists and 13 digs for the only double-double of the match. She also had seven kills, two service aces and hit an impressive .583 for Wake.
In the first game, the Cavaliers led 17-16, but Wake tied the game at 17-17 and scored the next point to take the lead for good, before eventually winning 30-28. The Demon Deacons jumped out to an early lead in the second game, but UVa came back to take a 9-8 advantage. Wake Forest tied the game at 9-9 and grabbed the lead, 12-11, before winning 30-21. In the third and final game, the Demon Deacons opened up a commanding 18-9 lead, but the Cavaliers trimmed the advantage to 19-15, but could not get any closer as Wake posted a 30-20 win to earn the 3-0 victory.
As a team, Wake Forest hit .322 in the match, while the Cavaliers were only able to hit .108. The Demon Deacons also held a 42-32 edge in digs.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, October 6 when they host Duke at 7:00 p.m. in University Hall.
