RICHMOND, Va. – The #2 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team recorded its sixth consecutive shutout win after posting a 1-0 victory over the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in front of 953 spectators at Sports Backers Stadium. UVa’s Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) scored the contest’s only goal to help the Cavaliers remain undefeated on the season.
Virginia’s score came just before the end of the first half of play expired. The Cavaliers’ Matt Oliver (Waldorf, Md./Dematha Catholic) played a ball from the backfield ahead to Gibbs, who headed the ball to himself in a pack of VCU defenders and then chipped in a shot from 12 yards out at 42:45 to give UVa a 1-0 lead. The goal would stand as the game’s lone score and resulted in the game-winning marker. The assist was credited to Oliver and was the first assist of his collegiate career.
Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered his fifth shutout in goal this season and teamed with Curtis Bush, Jonathan Cole, Marshall Leonard and Oliver to help preserve the Cavaliers’ sixth shutout this year.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 9-0-1 overall, while the loss drops VCU’s record to 4-4-1 on the season. The win gives UVa an 18-0-1 lead in the all-time series.
The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, October 13th when Virginia faces the Clemson Tigers. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium.
