CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team lost to Duke 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-24) Saturday evening (October 6) at University Hall. The Cavaliers have lost their last four matches and fall to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Duke improves to 12-2 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
UVa first-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) registered her second career double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Second-year outside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) paced the Cavaliers in kills with six. Second-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led the ‘Hoos with 13 digs, while second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) added 11 digs and five kills.
Duke outside hitter Jill Sonne led all players with 11 kills and notched four blocks, while outside hitter Ashley Harris added 10 kills and nine digs. Middle blocker Katie Gilman registered a match-highs of 16 digs and five blocks and also added eight kills. Setter Arielle Linderman recorded 39 assists and four service aces, both of which were match highs. She also added six digs and three blocks.
In the first game, the Blue Devils took a quick 7-1 lead, which they never relinquished. UVa cut the Duke lead to 12-9 on a service ace by Davis, but the Blue Devils scored the next four points and went on to win the first game 30-19. With game two tied a 2-2, the Blue Devils took the lead for good on the first of two consecutive solo blocks. Duke recorded six team blocks in its 30-18 win in the second game. The Blue Devils raced out to a 12-6 lead in the third game and then moved ahead 18-10. Virginia scored four of the next six points to trim the Duke lead to six, 20-14, but could get no closer as the Blue Devils took the third game 30-24.
As a team, Duke hit .258 in the match, compared to the Cavaliers’ .034 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils also held a 57-48 edge in digs and a 12-4 advantage in blocks. Duke had 10 service aces to UVa’s three as well.
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, October 12 when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for a 7:00 p.m. match against Clemson.
