Virginia’s Cara Unterkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) notched the first goal of the game for Virginia (8-3) and drew the stroke that resulted in the Cavaliers’ second goal of the game as UVA defeated Ohio State (9-2) 2-1 today in Charlottesville. Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made eight saves to help preserve the win for the Hoos.

Ohio State nearly scored in the first ten minutes of the game as a long pass across the circle led to a shot that hit the post, but the ball dribbled in front of the cage and the Cavaliers were able to clear. The Cavaliers jumped on the scoreboard first as Shannon LaVigne (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) brought the ball into the circle and drew a corner. The first corner yielded a Coleman shot but a defensive stick tackle gave the Hoos another corner. This time Unterkofler controlled a loose ball and lifted it into the cage with 7:49 to play in the half, putting UVA up 1-0. Emily White made four saves in the half, including a diving stick save to her right to send the Hoos to the break up 1-0.

Three minutes into the second half Virginia drew another corner, and Unterkofler’s tip was stopped on the goal line by the post player’s body, putting Virginia to the stroke mark. The Cavaliers missed the stroke but still held a 1-0 lead.

Virginia would convert on their second stroke, though. An Ohio State back pass was intercepted by Unterkofler, and as she was trying to make a play on the ball, she was taken out of the play by the Buckeye keeper. Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) deposited the ball in the lower left of the cage, putting Virginia up 2-0 with 29:03 to play.

The Buckeyes were able to force six corners the remainder of the half, but the Cavalier defense kept them out of the cage until the 14:12 mark. A give and go between Vanessa Immordino and Lorena Margni resulted in a goal for the Buckeyes, pulling them within one at 2-1. But Virginia held strong for the remainder of the game, preserving the win.

Virginia returns to action on Wednesday as the Cavaliers host the Dukes of James Madison. Game time is 7:00 on October 10th.
