NORFOLK, VA – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team was in action this weekend (Oct. 5-7) at the 2001 East Coast Championship Collegiate Tournament. The Cavaliers had 12 players compete in the singles portion of the event and six doubles teams take part in the doubles draws.
Seven of Virginia’s 12 singles entrants advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective draws. Jason Romesburg, Jay Curtis, and Mark Montandon advanced to the semifinals in their draws. Stephen Nolen advanced all the way to the semi-finals of the “A” flight. Romesburg defeated Richmond’s Joakin Arhammar, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round, Richmond’s Dan Scrafford in the second, and VMI’s David Emery in the quarterfinals. He lost to American’s Josh Procacci, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0, in the semifinal round.
Curtis, meanwhile, collected victories over Chris Berg (Mt. Saint Mary’s), 6-0, 6-1, VMI’s Brian Ahmes, 6-1, 6-1, and American’s Jonah Fliegelman (no score available). Curtis fell to Old Dominion’s Niklas Oskarsson in a close semifinal match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Montandon captured wins over Milton Aguirre (VMI), 6-1, 6-0, and Radford’s Ross Harvey, 6-0, 6-0, before losing to Richmond’s Josh Howard in the semis.
In doubles, Michael Duquette and Stephen Nolen teamed and advanced to the semifinals of the flight “A” draw. In the “B” flight, Jonathan Chou and Dan Lempa won their first and second round matches to advance to the semifinals. Meanwhile, two UVa teams — the first made up of Gregory Alpert and Tim Snead and the second comprised of Jay Curtis and Patrick Guarnieri — advanced to the semifinals of the “C” flight. Curtis and Guarnieri won their semifinal match, but fell in the finals of the “C” doubles draw.
