Charlottesville, VA – Virginia’s Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) intercepted a James Madison (8-5) pass in overtime and brought the ball down the left side of the field before she crossed it to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle Area) at the top of the circle. Slocum pulled right around the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty cage to give the Cavaliers a come-from-behind victory over the 14th-ranked Dukes. The Cavaliers had thwarted a possible Madison game-winner as Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walshingham Academy) made a save on a Dukes shot with the edge of her pads just three minutes into overtime.

JMU got on the board first as Janelle Perlis took the ball down the right side of the field and rocketed a shot into the boards, putting the Dukes up 1-0 with 10:12 to play in the first half.

The Cavaliers answered right back as Slocum brought the ball into the circle and was fouled by the keeper, giving the Hoos a corner. A Madison foul on the first attempt gave UVA another shot, and this time Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) converted, sending a shot underneath the JMU keeper’s pads, tying the game 1-1. Captains Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs) and Mason White (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) were credited with assists. The teams were tied at the break 1-1.

Virginia took seven shots in the second half and limited the Dukes to just one shot and two corners, but the Cavaliers were unable to dent the back of the cage.

The Cavaliers started with possession in the overtime period, but Madison’s Veerle Goudswaard got off the first shot on a reverse sweep, but Carr was up to the task, preserving the Cavaliers’ chances. Hill stepped in front of her player and took the ball away at midfield and drove down the left side before sending the ball to a wide-open Slocum. Slocum pulled right around the keeper and sent the ball to the boards for the win.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 9-3. The face the #5 North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, October 13 at 3:00 at University Hall Turf Field.
