CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia women’s head basketball coach Debbie Ryan announced today that junior forward Marcie Dickson (Maplewood, N.J.) will miss the 2001-02 season because she has not been cleared to play at this time due to medical issues.

“We’ve decided it’s in Marcie’s best interest to sit out this season,” Ryan said. “We’ll miss her, but want to do what’s best for her.”

The 6-2 Dickson joined the Virginia program in the fall of 1999 and has lettered for the Cavaliers each of the last two seasons. She played in all 32 of the team’s games last season, starting 15, and averaged 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds a game.

With the loss of Dickson, Virginia has just four letter winners returning from last year’s 18-14 team that participated in the NCAA Tournament. UVa has participated in the NCAA Tournament each of the last 18 seasons.
