CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia volleyball team lost to Clemson 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-21) Friday evening (October 12) at Jervey Gym. The Cavaliers have lost their last five matches and fall to 5-9 overall and 1-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It is the first time since 1995 that UVa has dropped five consecutive matches. Clemson improves to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in the ACC with the victory.
Fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led UVa with 13 kills, nine digs and two service aces. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) added nine kills, while second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) dished out a team-high 22 assists. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) registered 15 assists and seven digs, while fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) tallied seven kills.
Ryane Beasley paced a balanced Clemson attack with 13 kills and added 12 digs for the only double-double of the match. Beasley also hit .435 in the match. Jodi Steffes contributed 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage, while Lori Ashton added 10 kills and three blocks. Setter Jessi Betcher totaled 22 assists and seven digs for the Tigers.
As a team, Clemson hit .281 in the match, compared to the Cavaliers’ .125 hitting percentage. The Tigers also held a 52-42 edge in digs and a 7-4 advantage in blocks.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, October 13 when they travel to Atlanta for a 7:00 p.m. match against Georgia Tech.
