Virginia’s Jennifer Owens finished sixth today in the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet to help the Cavaliers to a sixth-place finish as a team, defeating four ranked teams, including #12 Colorado State. Virginia, ranked #15 this week, totalled 265 points, edging perennial power Villanova by 2 and the #12 Rams by 20 points. Of the five teams that finished ahead of the Cavaliers, four were ranked in the top 6 and only #16 Washington finished ahead of Virginia. On the men’s side, Walton Kingsberry and Matt Ruhl finished two seconds apart to lead the men to a 17th place finish overall.

Owens ran the race in 20:59 and her teammate Sarah Folse finished in 21:47, good enough for 32nd place. A pack of Cavaliers, Jolene Hampson, Ellen Dwyer, and Meg McGarvey, finished eight seconds apart to complete the scoring for Virginia.

The top four scorers for the men’s team raced within 17 seconds of each other but it would not be enough to push the men into the top 15, which they missed by 10 points.

In the women’s invitational, Virginia’s Meg Schwartz took 12th to lead the team to a third-place finish. Jane Maxwell (18th) and Melanie Matthews (27th) also finished in the top 30 for the Cavaliers.
