ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia Tech outside hitter Maja Pachale hit .500 and tallied 19 kills in leading the Yellow Jackets to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-19) victory over the Virginia volleyball team Saturday evening (October 13) at O’Keefe Gym. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. UVa has lost its last six matches, its longest losing streak since an 11-match slide in the middle of the 1995 season.
The Cavaliers had a trio of players notch seven kills in the match. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) had seven kills while hitting .333 and added four digs and a match-high four blocks. Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) tallied seven kills and two blocks, while fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was UVa’s third player with seven kills. Second-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led the Cavaliers’ defensive effort with 13 digs and also recorded four kills. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) registered 16 assists and second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) added 11 assists and six digs.
In addition to her 19 kills, Pachale had seven digs for the Yellow Jackets. Lynnette Moster recorded the only double-double of the match with 11 kills and 12 digs. She also tallied five service aces. Setter Kele Eveland dished out a match-high 44 assists and added eight digs and five kills.
As a team, Georgia Tech hit .345 in the match, while Virginia was limited to a .157 hitting percentage. The Yellow Jackets also held a 56-36 edge in kills and a 60-37 advantage in digs. UVa won the blocking battle as the Cavaliers held a 7-3 advantage in team blocks.
The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 16 when they host ACC-leading North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. in University Hall.
