CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, under the direction of 24th-year head coach Mark Bernardino, will open their 2001-2002 schedule by hosting West Virginia Friday (October 19) at 5:00 p.m. at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The one-meter diving competition will commence at 4:00 p.m.

The UVa men’s team is coming off an outstanding 2000-2001 season. The Cavaliers won their third-consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and set a meet record with 883.5 points. The team also placed 13th at the 2001 NCAA Championships, the second highest finish in school history. It also marked the third-consecutive year UVa has placed in the top 15 at NCAAs. In dual meet competition, Virginia was 8-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the ACC. With 18 letterwinners returning, including seven All-Americans, and an excellent first-year class, the Cavaliers will be one of the elite teams in the country.

The Cavalier women also turned in an impressive season in 2000-2001. Virginia finished 12th at the 2001 NCAA Championships, marking its third-consecutive top 12 finish at the national meet. UVa was also second at the ACC Championships and finished its dual meet schedule with a 7-1 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the ACC. The Cavaliers lost only five of 23 letterwinners from last year’s team and among the 18 returning letterwinners are five All-Americans. Third-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is the two-time defending NCAA champion in the mile. With the addition of a quality first-year class, UVa will once again be one of the top teams in the country.

Admission to home Virginia swimming and diving meets is free of charge.
