CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Florida State’s Norisha Campbell, Erica Bunch and Alex Sevillano combined for 51 kills to lead the Seminoles to a 3-1 (26-30, 30-20, 30-26, 30-21) victory over the University of Virginia volleyball team Friday evening (October 19) at University Hall. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-12 overall and 1-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Florida State improves to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in the ACC.
UVa jumped out to a quick lead with a 30-26 victory in the first game, but could not hold the momentum as Florida State rallied to win the next three games and send the Cavaliers to their eighth-consecutive loss.
Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) led UVa with 14 kills and a .346 hitting percentage and added four blocks and four digs. Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) also reached double figures in kills with 13 and posted a match-high five blocks. Fischer also notched a pair of service aces and moved into second place on UVa’s all-time service aces list with 135, just four short of the school record of 139. Second-year outside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) rounded out Virginia’s players in double figures in kills with 11. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) registered the ‘Hoos only double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) added 19 assists and seven digs.
FSU’s Campbell led all players with 18 kills and a .406 hitting percentage. Bunch registered a double-double with 17 kills and 19 digs. Sevillano had seven digs and four service aces in addition to her 16 kills. Setter Jennifer Anderson tallied 50 assists and seven digs for the Seminoles.
Florida State outhit UVa .278 to .178, but only held a 62-59 advantage in kills. The Seminoles held a 60-49 edge in digs, while UVa outblocked FSU 8-5.
The Cavaliers will look to snap their eight-match slide on Sunday, October 21 when they host N.C. State at University Hall at 1:00 p.m.
