Final Stats

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their respective seasons in fine fashion with convincing wins over West Virginia Friday (October 19) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier men toppled West Virginia 125-93, while the Virginia women registered a 120-94 victory.

The Virginia men won the first nine events before exhibitioning the remaining four events. Virginia’s 400-yard medley relay of Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Acad), Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Acad), Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), and Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was victorious, claiming the top spot in the event by more than five seconds (3:27.00). Second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:12.49 and finished third in UVa’s sweep of the 100-yard freestyle, posing a time of 47.47. Second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) was a dual winner, taking both the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) was a double winner for UVa as well in the 50-yard freestyle (20.60) and 500 freestyle (4:35.10). First-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) claimed 200 IM title, posting a time of 1:52.02.

Third-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) led the UVa sweep of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.03, followed by first-year teammates Chris Cooper (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) (1:53.25), and Scott DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) (1:55.67). Second-year Luke Wagner (Newport News, Va./Menchville) won in the 200-yard backstroke, ahead of teammates Chad Barlow (1:50.92) and Brian Best (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) (1:56.92). In the one-meter diving competition, third-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) won the one-meter board competition with a score of 281.63. He also earned the top score in the three-meter diving at 271.05.

The Virginia women recorded eight consecutive victories to open the meet against West Virginia, the first six of which were UVa sweeps. UVa exhibitioned the final five events. The Cavalier’s 200-yard medley relay of fourth-years Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield), and first-years Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep), and Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) took the first win of the meet in a time of 1:48.23. Second-year Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep) took a commanding victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:59.13) and also captured the title in the 100 fly (57.12). Third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) took the top spots in the 200 freestyle (1:53.60) and the 100 back (59.67).

In addition to being a member of Virginia’s winning 200-yard medley relay, Megan Roesch won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.46. Virginia’s final dual-event winner was third-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), who took high honors in the 200 IM (2:06.97), five seconds ahead of the next swimmer, and won the 100 free in a time of 53.02. First-year Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:02.14, while fellow first-year Coco Buck (Herndon, Va./Herndon) took the title in the 100 breast. Third-year diver Alison Sharp (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 264.15 points. Sharp recorded the top score in the three-meter event (253.20) as well, but exhibitioned the event.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, October 27 when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for a 1:00 p.m. meet against the Tigers.
