CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The #15 University of Virginia women’s soccer team defeated in-state rival William & Mary, 1-0, Tuesday night (October 2), in front of 820 fans at Kl?ckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Virginia freshman Lindsay Gusick scored the fourth goal of her young career in the 66th minute to clinch the victory.
The Cavaliers outshot the Tribe, 7-3, in the first half, but could not capitalize on their chances. In the second half, William & Mary equaled the Cavs’ shot total at seven, but Virginia got the one shot that mattered when defender Kelly Worden found Gusick streaking through the Tribe defense. Gusick collected the 30-yard pass and slotted the ball under a diving Courtney Owen.
Virginia moves to 5-2-1 overall on the win, while William & Mary falls to 6-3-1 overall. The Cavaliers return to Kl?ckner Thursday (October 4), for a non-conference matchup with Brigham Young University. That match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
