CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four Virginia volleyball players reached double figures in kills to help the Cavaliers snap an eight-match losing streak with a 3-1 (27-30, 30-22, 33-31, 30-20) victory over N.C. State Sunday afternoon (October 21) at University Hall. With the victory, UVa improves to 6-12 overall and 2-9 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack fall to 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers, who recorded their 11th-consecutive victory over N.C. State, fell behind with a 30-27 loss in the first game. Virginia rebounded to win the next three games by scores of 30-22, 33-31 and 30-20 to earn the victory.
Virginia fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) recorded the only double-double of the match with 14 kills and 13 digs. She also added four service aces. Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) tallied 13 kills and hit .370. Third-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Gershaw) hit a team-high .409 with 12 kills and also added a team-high five blocks. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) rounded out UVa’s players in double figure kills with 11. Boyle added seven digs and two service aces as well. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) and second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) both had 26 assists.
Charece Williams, Rebecca Anderson and Alison Kreager led the Wolfpack with nine kills apiece. Williams also led N.C. State 14 digs. Lindi Sheppard dished out 28 assists for NCSU and also added eight digs and five service aces. Sarah Ensminger contributed eight kills, eight digs and five block assists.
Virginia outhit N.C. State .218 to .126 and also held a 62-49 advantage in kills. The Wolfpack held a 54-47 edge in digs.
The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 23 when they travel to Washington, D.C. for an 8:00 p.m. match against Georgetown. The match was originally scheduled for September 11.
