WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) set the Virginia school record for service aces with the 140th of her career, but it wasn’t enough as the UVa volleyball team lost 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-22) to Georgetown Tuesday evening (October 23) at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-13 on the season, while Georgetown improves to 13-6.
Fischer entered the match with 136 career service aces and surpassed Jo Anne Gilman’s (1984-86) school record total of 139 with her fourth ace of the match. Fischer now has 141 career service aces. In addition to the five aces, Fischer tallied six kills and a pair of blocks. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) led the Cavalier offense with nine kills and added six digs and two blocks. Third-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) hit a team-high .556 with six kills and also posted a match-high four blocks, while first-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) dished out 18 assists.Yulia Vtyurina led the Hoyas with a match-high 24 kills, while Lauren Warner added 14 kills, nine digs and three service aces. Sara Albert hit an impressive .750 with nine kills, while Jennifer Ward had 48 assists and eight digs.
Georgetown hit an impressive .352 in the match, compared to UVa’s .206 hitting percentage. The Hoyas held a 56-36 edge in kills and a 45-21 advantage in digs. UVa held a 7-4 edge in team blocks.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, October 27 when they host Maryland at 7:00 p.m. in University Hall.
