Two of the nation’s toughest defenses met today in Washington, DC as the Virginia Cavaliers met the Georgetown Hoyas on Kehoe Field. The Virginia defense triumphed as the Hoos allowed only 4 shots and two corners, keeping the Hoyas out of the cage for the whole 70 minutes. Keepers Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walshingham Academy) combined for the shutout, Virginia’s sixth on the year. On the offensive side of the ball, Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and Jessie Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) were both involved in three of the goals, and Goodloe’s second assist was the 50th of her career, making her only the second Cavalier to reach this plateau and only the sixth person in the history of the ACC to notch 50 career assists.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the first ten minutes of the game as Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) sent a long ball down the sideline and Coleman ran onto it in the upper right corner. Molly McManus (Oakton, Va./Oakton) forced a corner and on the play, Coleman rocketed a direct shot to the boards, assisted by White and Goodloe.
Six minutes later Rosie Walker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) intercepted a pass on the left sideline and took it downfield. A Hoya foul in the circle gave the Hoos a penalty corner, and on the restart, Coleman played with the ball up top before firing a shot to the boards, putting the Cavaliers up 2-0 with 20:42 to play in the half.
Virginia went up 3-0 after Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), who was playing just down the road from where she played high school ball, stepped in front of a Hoya pass and took the ball into the circle. There, Ashleigh Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown), who started in her first collegiate game today, forced a corner. Again, Mason White and Goodloe set up Coleman, whose rocket to the boards put Virginia up 3-0 with 15:55 to play. Coleman’s goal completed her fourth career hat trick, a mark achieved by only four other Virginia players in history. In addition, it was Goodloe’s 50th career assist.
Goodloe notched her own goal four minutes later as the Cavaliers put together a nice combination coming out of a 16-yard hit. Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) sent the ball across the field to Beach, who slotted it up to Walker. Walker took it up the left side and sent it over to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) who took it into the circle. Slocum sent it to Haas, who took it to the endline. Goodloe picked up the loose ball in the circle and maneuvered around a defender and fired it into the cage, putting Virginia up 4-0 with 11:44 to play in the half. The Cavaliers took a 4-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Virginia kept up the offensive pressure, forcing six corners. The Cavaliers added to their total as McManus sent a ball into the circle, and Kiersten Van Hooser (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) tipped the ball over to Haas, who deposited the ball in the boards for a 5-0 lead. It was Haas’ first collegiate career goal. On the defensive side of the ball, Virginia held the Hoyas to two shots and one corner. Emily White made her only save of the game in the second half before yielding to Carr, who came in with 11:30. The five goals scored on Georgetown is the most allowed by the Hoyas this year, who had allowed a total of 12 goals thus far and no more than two in a game.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 11-5 overall. The team is travelling down to Chapel Hill tonight to face the Tar Heels tomorrow, October 25, at 4:00 in a makeup game. Virginia returns home on Sunday to welcome the Duke Blue Devils at 1:00.
