CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team raced out to a 2-0 lead then posted a win in the fifth and deciding game for a 3-2 (30-27, 30-27, 18-30, 24-30, 15-9) triumph over Maryland Saturday evening (October 27) at University Hall. With the victory, UVa improves to 7-13 overall and 3-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Maryland falls to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the ACC.
The Cavaliers won the first two games by identical 30-27 scores to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Terrapins battled back to tie the match at 2-2 with 30-18 and 30-24 victories in the third and fourth games, respectively. In fifth and deciding game, the Cavaliers led throughout and registered a 15-9 win to pull out the 3-2 victory.
Virginia had a balanced attack as three players reached double figures in kills. Second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. She also added four blocks, two assists and a service ace. Second-year outside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) tallied 11 kills, while fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) added 10 kills and six blocks. Second-year middle Shannon Boyle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) led a strong blocking effort by the Cavaliers with a career and match-high 11 blocks. She also recorded nine kills, five digs and three service aces. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) was the second UVa player to record a double-double as she dished out 27 assists and had 11 digs. Fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) tied Davis for team-high honors in digs with 14. She also added seven kills, two blocks, two assists and two service aces. Second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) added 20 assists.
Carey Brennan and Willette Dority paced the Terrapins with 16 kills apiece. Brennan also added 16 digs for a double-double, while Willette hit .387 and had three service aces. Alexandra Toregas posted 14 kills and five blocks. Setter Lindsay Davey also registered a double-double with 53 assists and 11 digs. Amanda Ayres and Fiona DeFreitas tallied 12 and 11 digs, respectively, for Maryland.
As a team, the Cavaliers posted a season-high 16 blocks, while Maryland had 10. The Terps held a slight 63-59 edge in kills and outhit UVa .162 to .130. Maryland also held a 74-61 advantage in digs.
The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 30 when they travel to Durham, N.C. for a 7:30 p.m. match against Duke.
